Anti-Superbowl Party in Troy

Thanks to many things (work, half marathon training(!), and beating the Mass Effect trilogy, namely), I haven’t had a chance to write any posts in the past couple of weeks. But when I got this in my e-mail this morning, I thought it was worth breaking blog silence because it sounds like a great time.

I’m traveling for business that day and can’t make it, but the Confectionery is on my short list of places to check out.

TROY WINE BAR TO HOST ANTI-SUPERBOWL PARTY

Non-Football Fans Huddle for TV-free Night in Troy
TROY, N.Y. (Feb. 1, 2013) – For those who don’t know and don’t care which teams are playing in the Super Bowl, a Troy wine bar is offering a TV-free alternative.
This Sunday, Feb. 3, from noon till 9 p.m. The Charles F. Lucas Confectionery & Wine Bar will host its first ever “Anti-Super Bowl Party.” The game-day offerings will include a half-time art show, a super menu of cheese, dips, meats and championship-caliber wines, carefully chosen from their foodie-ball playbook.
“I worked in professional sports for a decade. It took me that long to realize that a game has no direct impact on my life,” said Vic Christopher, who owns the Confectionery with his wife Heather LaVine, also a former sports executive. “Wine and cheese get me more excited than watching some guy throw a ball around the grass.”

THE ART
The “Half-time Art Show” will feature metal sculptures comprised of reclamation materials, by metal sculptor Michelle M. Vara, of Ballard Road Art Studio Gallery, Wilton N.Y. www.michellevara.com
Vara will unveil a newly completed piece made from a tiny television, titled Laissez-fair #344. She has nicknamed it “couch potato.”
Sunday’s food highlights:
Craft Beer
Loose Cannon IPA, Heavy Seas (Baltimore, MD) 7.25 percent- $6
Fragrant IPA, with notes of grapefruit, herbs and pine
Lagunitas Maximus, Lagunitas Brewing Co. (Petaluma, CA) 7.5 percent – $6
Double IPA, pumped up with fresh hops and malt
Wine
Riesling  - Red Tail Ridge (Finger Lakes, NY) – $6
Red Zinfandel – Pacific Standard (CA) – $6
Cheese
Red Hawk – Cowgirl Creamery (Point Reyes, CA) Raw Cow  - $5
A stinky, but oh so triple creamy cheese.  Paired with apple cider jelly.

“We spend too much time looking at a screen and not enough time looking at each other,” said co-owner LaVine.  ”At the Confectionery we encourage conversation between friends old and new.”
After a career in sports marketing, the husband and wife team said they’re exhausted by the onslaught of marketing and media hype.
“Forget the game,” said Christopher. “Just watch the commercials the next day on hulu, if you want to.”

  1. Sigh. I haven’t beaten ME3 yet. Got distracted by an Assassin’s Creed 3 Christmas present. Thanks for reminding me to pick it back up.

I could care about the Superbowl this year, and I’m also forgoing going to any Superbowl parties since ticktets to Hill Farmstead’s Anniversary Celebration go on sale 30 minutes after kickoff and I can’t have any distractions. Might not be a bad idea to make my first trip to the Confectionery.

  2. I am simultaneously intrigued and turned off by the fact that they’re using the Super Bowl to gain attention for their feigned disdain for the Super Bowl.

Now I want to go out and find some Red Tail Ridge riesling.
